5 amazing things to do in Hue

Hue, Vietnam’s former capital city, is one of the most attractive places to visit in Vietnam. This old Emperor city will give you a unique glimpse into Vietnam’s past. If you are planning on traveling to Hue, make sure to stay here for a few days. Immerse yourself in the calm atmosphere, wander amongst temples and tombs, and get to know a different side of Vietnam. Sounds interesting to you? Here are five amazing things you can do in Hue:

1. Imperial City

You cannot go to Hue without visiting the Imperial City. This is the highlight of Hue and the reason most people come here. The Emperors used to live within the Imperial City and you will be able to see their palaces and temples. Although much of it has been damaged from battles, restoration is ongoing. Approximately 20 of its 148 buildings survived the attacks. Nevertheless,  it is still a fascinating place where you may encounter occasional dance and cultural performances within the walls. Be sure to visit it by night as well, when all the lights are turned on and the Imperial City gets a different look.

2. Thien Mu Pagoda

The Buddhist Temple is Vietnam’s tallest religious building and was established in 1601. However, it was not built until 1844. The pagoda stands 7 stories tall and is arguably one of the prettiest sites in Hue. Come here for a magnificent view over the Song Huong (Perfume River) too.

3. Hai Van Pass

If you are looking for some stunning landscape views, then head over to Hai Van Pass. If you have your own motorbike, this is something that you cannot miss. Some say it is Vietnam’s most scenic routes where you get incredible views of the coast. If you do not have a motorbike, no need to stress – there are plenty of local bike taxis that can give you a ride along this coastline. Be aware that this road is known for being unsafe – sharp curves can make it difficult to spot oncoming traffic for example, so make sure to drive as safely as possible and try not to ride a motorbike on your own if you are not very comfortable doing so.

4. The Perfume River

This beautiful river runs through Hue and is a sight on its own. Whether you want to just admire it while taking a stroll along the city or you want to do a boat tour, the Perfume River is a spectacular sight. Boat tours are highly popular and is a welcoming activity for those who have been using their legs too much.

5. Tam Giang Lagoon

If you want to go off the beaten path, travel to Tam Giang Lagoon. It is located about 15 km from the city of Hue and is easily reached with a motorbike. You will get the chance to see traditional Vietnamese villages, markets and temples in this serene place. If you are lucky, you might even get the opportunity to befriend a local fisherman who will allow you to join in on the fishing. Try not to miss out on the sunset here – get your camera ready and be ready to capture the lagoon in its most beautiful moment.
